SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute wrestling team hosted its first home dual meet of the season, on Dec. 19, against Eden. Eden, the Class C runner-up at sectionals, last season, defeated Springville 54-9.

Springville’s Jobe Fleming was pinned by Eden’s Cole Simmons, at 126, to kick off the match. Fleming was leading the entire match, before Simmons pinned him at the 5 minute, 48 second mark.

Springville sophomore Jake Smith won by decision 14-10, over Eden senior Jesse Vondell at 136. Vondell came into the match, with a 10-3 record on the season, including six pins. Smith was able to score, late in the match, for his sixth win of the season 6-1. Bryce Studzik of Springville scored the Griffins’ final points of the night, with a pin of Eden’s Cole Overhoff at 138. Studzik trailed, late in the match, but made a clutch take-down, to pin Overhoff at the 4:48 mark of the match.

At 145, Eden’s Peter Schmitz pinned Jerry Weeks, despite a controversy regarding whether or not Weeks was pinned. Not happy with the official’s decision, Weeks and Springville were charged with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Springville’s Ian Baker was pinned by Jonah Baldwin, at 152, in 24 seconds. Eden’s Alex Smythe pinned Bryant Boundy of Springville, at 170.

Boundy, normally a 160-pound competitor, moved up to Smythe in the match. Smythe, a Section VI Champion last season, will be headed to the University at Buffalo, to continue his wrestling career.

Eden’s Eric Shaffer pinned Tessa Smith at 106. Sawyer Overhoff of Eden pinned Zack Swank, to finish the match.

Springville traveled to the Pine Valley Tournament on Dec. 27.
