SPRINGVILLE — The co-ed varsity indoor track team from Springville-Griffith Institute competed in its first meet in nearly three weeks, when the athletes visited Lancaster.
Lexi Lines took part in the 50-hurdles, completing the event in 8.8 seconds, to take second place. Her finish came in spite of an unusual setback. “She literally ran out of her one shoe,” said Coach Joe Marvin. “It was too bad; she could have done better.”
In the 3,000, Springville’s Jess Wojtkowiak took first place, with a time of 11:06, followed by Elle Russell in second, with 12:23 and McKenzie Maloy at 12:43, for third place.
Tyler Olrogg completed the 3,200 in 11:34, taking second place, as Springville’s sole finalist in that competition.
Kalei Brautlacht and Joe Cocina were second and third in the 1,000, with times of 3:43.3 and 2:56, respectively. Wojtkowiak won another event, when she finished the 1,500 in 5:23.8. The next-closest Springville athlete was Brautlacht, who came in third, at 5.38. In the 1,600, Cocina came in second, at 5:06, and Olrogg finished at 5:21.5, for fifth place.
Tom Schweickert took first place in the 300, with a time of 42.5, as Springville’s Justin DeWitt came in third, at 43.3. In the 600, Hanna Hebden finished in 2:02.6, passing the leader just before the finish line, to take first place.
Jacob Moroge participated in the high jump for the first time and came in third with a jump of 5 feet, 2 inches.
The event featured four team relays, of which Springville won two. The team of Hebden, Brautlacht, Maloy and Wojtkowiak took the 4-by-800, with a combined time of 11:18.1. In the 4-by-400, Joelle Adamczyk, Hebden, Maloy and Meghan Loop took first, as well, with a time of 4:54.2.
Adamczyk, Sarah Marren, Molly Darling and Lines came in third in the 4-by-200, finishing in 2:08.0. The boys group of Olrogg, Cocina, DeWitt and Schweickert combined, for a time of 4:19.0, falling short to settle for second place.
The Springville athletes prepared to compete at Fredonia State College on Saturday, Jan. 12 and will be at the same location for their next meet, at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21.
