WESTERN NEW YORK — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs will award $2,500 scholarships with the stated goal of helping domestic violence survivors. Victims of domestic violence who wish to obtain or continue a post-secondary education may apply, before Feb. 1, to GFWC’s Success for Survivors Scholarship, 17344 North St. Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20036-2990, or via email to programs@GFWC.org, with “scholarship” in the subject line. Applicants may also call the GFWC Program Department at 202-347-3168.
Eligible applicants must be citizens or permanent, legal residents of the United States, be accepted or enrolled at a U.S. Department of Education-accredited public or private post-secondary or vocational institution and be recommended by a licensed or accredited domestic violence agency, counselor or social worker, who can provide information on behalf of the applicant.
The GFWC, which is made up of women’s clubs located throughout the United States and abroad, launched these scholarships with a stated goal of helping victims change their lives, after experiencing partner violence.
The New York State Federation of Women’s Clubs is a part of GFWC and Western New York is represented by the women’s clubs in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties. In June 2012, the GFWC awarded inaugural $1,000 scholarships to six survivors. Winners will be notified in April. Interested parties may download an application at www.GFWC.org/scholarship.
