SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute boys and girls cross-country team had a solid showing in two large invitationals recently, according to coach Chad Russell.
In early September, the varsity team had four team members win top 25 honors. The girls team captain, Jess Wojtkowiak, placed ninth; eighth grader Elle Russell placed 15th and Kalei Brautlacht placed 23rd, for the girls varsity team. Mitchel Bunic placed 12th in the boys varsity race and Don Piatek had a strong run, for the team, according to the coach.
The S-GI girls team finished sixth out of 17 teams, and second for smaller schools. The boys placed 12th out of 18 teams, which included the larger schools, and third for the smaller schools.
On Sept. 14, the team traveled to the West Seneca West Invitational at Sunshine Park. Mitchel Bunic finished 13th overall for a ribbon, while Don Piatek and team captain Elliott Tessmer had strong runs, in the field of more than 100 runners, according to Russell. The boys varsity team placed eighth out of 20 teams, that day. Wojtkowiak and Russell won ribbons for their 13th and 16th place finishes overall, in the field of more than 100 runners. Brautlacht and McKenzie Maloy were close behind, to make a tight pack of four, for S-GI.
