Grants announced for rural fire departments

[photo1]Applications are now being accepted for federally-funded Volunteer Fire Assistance grants to help rural fire departments enhance their wildfire fighting capabilities. The deadline for applications is May 15.The grant program is funded by the U.S. Forest Service and administered by the Department of Environmental Conservation. If awarded, fire departments will receive 50/50 matching funds. Last year, the program allocated more than $400,000 to 475 fire departments. It is anticipated that $350,000 will be allocated for 2012.Only expenses directly related to fire suppression efforts are eligible for funding. Haag, 31, of Boston after he was observed unconscious in his vehicle with his headlights on while parked on Feddick Road in the town of Boston.Investigation at the scene revealed that Haag was under the influence of alcohol. [photo1]Concord woman arrested for DWI March 3While on patrol on Route 39 in the town of Concord on Saturday evening, March 3, at 9:05 p.m., Erie County Sheriff’s deputy Jon Hanna observed a car being driven on the wrong side of the road.Hanna stopped the car and it was determined that the operator, Dawn R. Curtis-Keyes, 40, of Concord was intoxicated. She was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated. A breath test revealed that her blood alcohol content was .15 percent, almost twice the legal limit. Court says hospital failed to report suspected child abuse
Following an investigation by the New York State Health Department, Women & Children’s Hospital has been found noncompliant with New York state law governing child abuse after hospital officials failed to report a case of suspected physical abuse against an 11-month-old girl.The state health department ordered the hospital to take corrective steps to ensure suspected abuse is promptly reported.The investigation came after Antuan Jordan, 24, of Springville, was arrested in December after his daughter spent five days at the hospital with a head injury.
