FIFTY YEARS AGO
Jan. 25, 1962

Friends and well-wishers of Lucy Bensley crowded our little public library Jan. 14 for the dedication of her portrait. Out-of-town visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Pitt Petrie of Buffalo and William Neubach of WBEN, native of Springville. The Springville Jayncees acted as hostesses and were kept busy greeting and serving the many guests.

A seal design contest for the town of Concord Sesquicentennial is now underway. The winning design will be used as the official insignia of the centennial. First prize will be a cash award of $25.

At 9:13 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, Craig Andolina arrived safely at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, the son of Craig and Debbie Andolina of Main Street, North Collins.

Lingenfelter - Potter - The Sardinia United Methodist Church was the setting for the 5:30 p.m. candlelight ceremony which united Barbara M. Potter, daughter of Frank Potter of Sardinia and the late Marion Potter, and Ronald J. Lingenfelter, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Lingenfelter of Machias, on Nov. 28.

Four Springville members of the girls soccer team were recently named to the Division IV all-star team. They are Cari Sion, Wendy Sion, Amy Eppolito and Shari Sion.

The heroic sacrifice of the late Robert “Rob” Funk of Springville, who died in an effort to help three boaters who capsized in choppy Lake Erie waters off Port Colborne, Ontario during the Fourth of July weekend of 1990, has resulted in the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission recognizing his bravery. His parents, Herbert and Shirley Funk of Springville, will receive a medal from the Carnegie Commission honoring their son, along with a check for $2,500.

TEN YEARS AGO
Jan. 3, 2002

For the first time in 60 years, a Democrat has assumed the office of supervisor in the town of Concord. Mark Steffan of East Main Street, Springville, was sworn in to the top town post at noon Tuesday at the Concord Town Hall.

Presiding over his final town board meeting last Thursday afternoon, Concord Town Supervisor C. Murray Regan was presented with a resolution from the board thanking him for his service to the town the last four years. Regan lost his re-election bid in to November to Town Councilman Mark Steffan.

Two Air Force navigators originally from Springville, Colonel David Anderson, a class of 1951 Griffith Institute graduate and Major Carl Mosher, both flew on a B-52 mission from U-TAPAO Air Field, Thailand in 1967. Anderson is currently living in Washingon state and Mosher resides in Florida.

Amber Adanti and Michael Ibach of West Valley, Dec. 6, Brendan Michael.
