Sept. 13, 1962
Gerald DeWitt, seaman, United States Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer DeWitt of Smith Street, Springville, is serving aboard the guided missile cruiser, USS Boston.

Robert Seider, son of Winifred Seider of Smith Street, Springville, has been awarded the Industrial Minerals of Canada Ltd. Scholarship for his senior year of study in ceramic engineering at State University of New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

On Sunday, Sept. 9, 95 members of the Rumfola family gathered at Community Park for their annual reunion.

Sept. 14, 1972

Terry Decker defeated his twin brother Tim by 1 point, to win the Alan Brown Memorial Golf Tournament held at Springville Country Club. Ted Hamilton finished third.

Jim Parsons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Parsons of Springville, was recently awarded Eagle rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouting, at the annual Troop 524 awards dinner.

Lawton – Abbey – On July 22, at St. Martin’s Church, Langford, Carol Ann Abbey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Abbey of Collins, married Kenneth Robert Lawton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lawton of North Collins.

Cheiky – Engel – On Aug. 7 in the fall room in the Kennedy Center of Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio, by the Rev. Thomas Niccolls, Charity Susan Engel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Engel of Springville, married Michael Carl Cheiky Jr., son of Mr. and Mr. Michael Cheiky Sr. of Geneva, Ohio.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 8, 1982

Bill Lowe and his wife joined four couples on a trip that included a stay at the Bedford Springs Hotel in Bedford, Pa.

After checking the area from Gowanda to Arcade, the lowest temperature reading last week was registered near Bluemont, where the thermometer dipped to a low of 22 degrees above zero and wiped out the crops entirely. According to one farmer on Creek Road, this was the lowest reading on record, in that area, in August.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Klein of North Boston recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 29 at a dinner and reception held in their honor at the North Boston Fire Hall.

Laura Smith, daughter of Tim and Sandy Smith of Fowlerville, has been selected as an entrant in the 1982 Miss Teen Western New York Pageant.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 10, 1992

Samia and Osama Hassan and their four children of Cairo, Egypt, spent a week and a half visiting Samia’s brother, Irbrahim Hussein, in Springville. After seeing Seattle, various places in California, Hawaii, Orlando and Washington, D.C., the family came back to Springville.

Zimmie Gallagher, a resident of the Jennie B. Chaffee Nursing Home, had a surprise visit from Luther Reynolds. Gallagher, who has resided at Jennie B. since 1984, had recently turned 99 years old. Reynolds is 103 years old. Both are lifelong residents of Springville.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Barrier Farm Motorcycle Hill Climb was held last week on Creek Road, Springville.

This year, the 34th Annual Festival of Fine Arts will be held in the village of Springville in Fiddlers’ Green Park. The festival had previously been held in Colden.
