Sept. 20, 1962

The frame has been completed for Graff Motors’ new garage, being built on Route 219.

Peter Gaylord, an exchange student from Southern Rhodesia, Africa, was the guest of honor at a picnic given by members of the local American Field Service Committee. Gaylord has been living with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Richardson.

FORTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 21, 1972

James Cairns, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jack Cairns of Springville, is a semi-finalist in the National Merit Program. The appointed semifinalists are among the nation’s most academically talented high school seniors, as determined by the National Merit scholarship examination.

Richard Smith has been appointed to manager, sales administration, of Winsmith Division of UMC Industries.

Heather Beecher of Springville has returned from Stockholm, Sweden, where she spent the summer as an American Field Service student.

A boy was born to Mr. and Mr.:
Dennis MacLaughlin of Franklinville, Sept. 12.

Girls were born to Mr. and Mrs.:
Wayne McIntyre of Otto, Sept. 16; Walter Hanson of Delevan, Sept. 17.

Smock – Whitehead – On Sept. 2, at The First United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Raymond Risden, Janet Whitehead, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Roland Whitehead of Springville, married Joseph Barton Smock, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Barton Smock.

Sept. 16, 1982

Last week, Boy Scout Troop 524, under the leadership of Joel Maul, cleaned up debris on Springville’s Main Street.

Tillinghast – Glass – The First United Methodist Church in Springville was the setting for the July 10 wedding of Gary Tillinghast, the son of Mr. and Mr. Floyd Tillinghast of Holland, and Margo Glass, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Glass of Springville.

Butler – Davis – St. Peter’s Church in Eugene, Ore. was the setting on for the Aug. 21 wedding of Elizabeth “Betsy” Davis, the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Lockard Davis of Springville, and David Butler of Eugene, Ore., formerly of Buffalo.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 17, 1992

A second confirmed case of a rabid raccoon has been found in Springville. It was found on Newman Street last Thursday and shot by Erie County Sheriff’s Deputy Cochise Redeye.

The Concord Town Board agreed with the Springville Baseball Club’s proposal to sell the 16.5-acre field to the town for $1. The field will become the town’s first public park.

Cable TV for residents of Ashford is closer, with the recent grant of a license to Elmar Communications of Bolivar.

Pierce – O’Neil – Mary O’Neil and David Pierce of Springville were married on Sept. 1 at the Blasdell Village Hall, in a ceremony performed by Judge Eugene Salisbury. The bride is the daughter of Jean O’Neil of Blasdell and the late James O’Neil. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pierce of Stroudsburg, Pa.

Boberg – Ross – Kimberly Ann Ross, the daughter of Christine and Arthur Ross of Collins Center, and Duane Edward Boberg, son of Diane and David Boberg of West Valley, were married June 13 in an outdoor ceremony in the gazebo of Primetyme Bistro in Chaffee, by Pastor Neil Katterman of Hope Lutheran Church in Arcade.

TEN YEARS AGO
Sept. 12, 2002

Nearly 200 runners took part in the 15th annual Bertrand Chaffee and Home Tender Loving Care Challenge on Sept. 8. Patrick Occhino of Springville was the first male to finish the race and Carolyn Corgel of Springville was the first female to finish.

Michael and Amanda Strawder of Gowanda, Aug. 21, Patrick Francis Olson; Joseph Payne and Jennifer Reed of Gowanda, Sept. 4, Hayden Cassidy Payne.

MARRIED
Rumfola – Beverlin – Kara Beverlin and Mark Rumfola were married Aug. 17 at St. Aloysius Church in Springville. The Rev. John Kwiecien officiated. The bride is the daughter of Roy and Brenda Beverlin and the groom is the son of Charles and Betty Rumfola.
