The Springville Jaycees celebrated the anniversary of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce by winning the three highest awards at the regional held in West Seneca on Friday, Jan. 26. These awards were the man-mile award, the manpower award and the highest advance registration award.
The Griffith Institute and Central School Faculty Association will play host to the presidents of various clubs in the school district on Feb. 8 at the dining room of the Springville Methodist Church. John Hamacher, supervisor of education and training at the Tonawanda Chevrolet Plant, will speak to the group about the problems obtaining and developing supervisory personnel in industry.
World Service Day will be held Sunday in St. Paul’s Evangelical United Brethren Church in West Valley, announced the pastor, The Reverend Robert B. Leach.
Theodore Winkey, Springville dairy farmer who also owns a farm in Cattaraugus County, was chosen as the “Roughage King” for the year in Cattaraugus County last Tuesday at a two-day convention held at the Farm, Home and 4-H Center in Ellicottville. Alfalfa and corn silage grown on his farm in the town of Ashford were judged the best of all entries.
The 1962 officers of the Springville Kiwanis Club were installed at the regular meeting of the club on Monday, Jan. 22 by Lieutenant Governor Leroy Kehr of Lancaster, representing the Niagara Frontier South Division of the New York District Kiwanis International. The Springville club was organized April 17, 1961 and received its chapter on July 22, 1961.

Three hundred Boy Scouts and 50 leaders from Western New York met at Collins Conservation Club on Jan. 28, 29 and 30 for a camp out and Klondike Derby. Eleven Scouts and three leaders from Springville Troop 524 participated.
Springville’s League for the Handicapped has announced the appointment of Pauline Blackley as coordinating teacher for the Nursery School for Handicapped Children.
At a regular meeting on Jan. 27, Fred Trevett, the oldest living and active member of Springville Masonic Lodge No. 351, was presented a pin for his service to the lodge. A surprise birthday party was given for Fred, 89, and Walter Jensen, 86, both longtime members of Springville Lodge No. 351.

With a wind chill factor rated at 52 degrees below zero, a host of stranded travelers found the warmth of Springville ready, willing and able to rise to the occasion, as a group of youngsters and their chaperones took refuge in our fire hall with the firemen, ladies auxiliary and some local business folks to make everyone comfortable for their stay here.
Twenty years after she organized the League for the Handicapped, Betty Cooke has been accepted to graduate school at Cornell University.

The first baby of the year at Chaffee Hospital in 1992 was born to Amish parents who, due to their religious beliefs, declined to have their names published. Therefore, the honors of the first baby of the New Year and associated gift certificates were awarded to the second baby, Katie Stevens, daughter of Daniel and Luann Stevens of Springville.
Art Benson will be honored as the Springville Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, largely for his work on the U.S. Route 219 Association.

Jillian Mackenzie Goldsmith was Bertrand Chaffee Hospital’s first baby born in 2002. She was delivered on Jan. 3 at 12:31 p.m. and tipped the scales at 6 pounds, 12 ounces. The proud parents are Danielle Bogardus and Lance Goldsmith of Arcade.
Homer and Jean Harvey of Collins Center celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Oct. 25 at the Yorkshire Inn during a dinner party with family and friends. The couple was married Oct. 26, 1946 at the Gowanda United Methodist Church and has five children.
Board members met for the town of Ashford’s annual end of year meeting on Dec. 26 with Bob Potter in attendance as councilman for the last time. He was presented a commemorative plaque recognizing his years on the board.
