FIFTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 9, 1962

Mick McCarthy and Frank Nunweiler, who will be operating the Springville Bowling Lanes, have completed the remodeling of the alleys.

The Springville Baseball Club moved into a tie for first place in the playoffs, with two wins, this past weekend. The team scored victories against Gowanda 6 – 4 and Arcade 4 – 2.

Bob Gray of Springville Country Club and his guest, Terry Sheehan, took top honors in the club’s first annual invitational tournament with a 36-hole best ball of seven under par, 133. Red flight winners were Joe Bellanca and Ted Buano, with a score of 134; Dick Nunn and Dick Cameron, in with 135, captured second place and third place went to Bill Lowe and his guest, Dunc Tutton.

Donald Youngers of Bliss, Aug. 1.

There were 335 students in attendance at the Griffith Institute School of Music.

Dr. Robert Heichberger, a native of Colden, has been named executive assistant to the president of the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Gamel – Caputo – On July 9, at Corpus Christi Church, Mineola, N.Y., Mary Caputo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benedict Caputo of Long Island married Kenneth Gamel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gamel of Springville.

Heim – Wittmeyer – On June 17 in St. Mary’s Church, New Oregon, the Rev. Edwin Spiedel married Sharon Wittmeyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wittmeyer of Springville, and Larry Heim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Heim of Gowanda.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 5, 1982

“The Big Mac Attach” is on the way as Springville Chamber of Commerce officially welcomed Fred and Carolyn Beatty at a reception at the Leland House last Thursday afternoon. The official groundbreaking at the site of the new McDonald’s Restaurant took place next to Mahl Brothers on Route 219 just before the reception.

An open house will be held at Mortons Corners Fire Hall on Aug. 15 from 2 – 5 p.m. for the 65th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Hollet Warner.

At a recent installation dinner of the newly-elected officers of the Springville Jaycees, a testimonial for Dick Wendle was held. Wendle was honored by the Erie County Legislature, County Executive Edward Rutkowski and the town of Concord, as well as the local chapter of the Jaycees. He was named keyman of the last decade and presented with a framed certificate by Tom Reynolds of the town of Concord.

Lee Wohlhueter, assistant chief of the Colden Volunteer Fire Company, suffered injuries late Saturday night during a multiple-alarm fire at Andrews’ General Store, town of Colden, where he resides in an apartment over the store.

MARRIED
Pring – Lehning – Grace Lutheran Church in Hamburg was the setting on July 17 for the wedding of Lois Ann Lehning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Lehning of Boston, and James Evans Pring, son of Jean Pring of Warren, Pa. and the late Eugene Pring.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 6, 1992

Ten residents, along with staff members and volunteers from Fiddlers Green Manor, attended the eighth annual senior Olympics, held Thursday, July 16, at the Aurora Health Care Center in East Aurora. Two residents of Fiddlers Green Manor won medals: Lewis Holdermiller won a gold medal in horseshoes and William Fanning won a silver medal in horseshoes and a bronze medal in the bean bag toss.

An official flag burning ceremony was held Monday, July 27 by the Concord Post at the Field and Stream grounds on White Street.

Ryan King of Springville-Griffith Institute received high honors at the Jerry Butler Athletes in Action Football Camp. The “Total Athlete Award” is voted on by the coaching staff based on commitment and dedication.

TEN YEARS AGO
Aug. 1, 2002

Dr. Ann DeNardin recently joined the practice of Service Medical PC, 27 Franklin St., Springville, and is accepting new patients.

The Springville-Griffith Institute class of 1937 held its 65-year reunion on June 29 at the home of Gertrude Rauch in Colden. There were 66 students in the graduating class and 12 of the 23 living classmates attended.

The West Valley Central School Board adopted a contingency budget at its July 22 meeting, after the voters failed the first budget in June.

Motorcycle enthusiasts held a benefit dice run to support Mercy Flight, recently. They presented a check for $4,233 to Mercy Flight representatives.

Bobseine – Gernatt – on June 15, Shannon Marie Gernatt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gernatt of Collins, and David Warren Bobseine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Bobseine of Gowanda, were married by Gwynn Lewis at Noview Lodge on Point Peter Road in Gowanda.
