FIFTY YEARS AGO
June 20, 1963

New York state Gov. Nelson Rockefeller presided over the ground-breaking ceremony for the $28 million nuclear center.

Gordon Sheret of Springville and Martin Wangelin of Colden graduated from State University Agricultural and Technical Institute at Delhi.

Marine Warrant Officer Robert Yoder graduated from a basic school for warrant officers at the Marine Corps School in Quantico, Va.

Marine Private Thomas Chowaniec, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Chowaniec of Springville, completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Depot at Parris Island, S.C.

Steven Simon, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Simon of Springville, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

John Dahlberg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dahlberg of Springville, was among the 320 students to graduate from Brandeis University. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology.

Marine Midland Bank – Western has announced the promotion of Henry Lehning to assistant vice president.

Arthur Knueppel, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. D.J. Knueppel of Springville, passed the examination for advancement to membership in the American College of Hospital Administrators.

Kaplan – Simon – Linda Simon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Simon of Miama, Fla., married George Kaplan in Miami, Fla.

Dawley – Vasquez – Ofelia Vasquez, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Vasquez of Corpus Christi, Texas, married Robert Dawley, the son of Grace Carrow of Springville, on June 9, in Corpus Christi.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
June 16, 1983

Anne Smith of East Concord, a member of the Springville Future Farmers of America, took another step toward FFA Placement in Agriculture Proficiency Award Program, when her application was submitted, for the regional competition.

Seniors Melinda McGarry and William Rindfuss received the Army Reserve “Spirit of Victory” National Scholarship/Athlete Award.

Dr. Brian Scharf, the son of Keith and Clare Scharf of Springville, will join Dr. Richard Nunn at 85 Franklin St. in Springville.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
June 17, 1993

The Sardinia Town Board agreed to prohibit gravel mining, south of Middle Road in the town, as part of its zoning legislation.

Linda and Leo Lubke were honored at a luncheon in New York City, for their restoration of the Springville Depot.

Springville recently hosted Mohammad Zedan, the mayor of Kafr Manda, a town in northern Galilee.

TEN YEARS AGO
June 19, 2003

Mr. and Mrs. William Benz of Springville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 6. They were married in St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Springville in 1953. The couple has two children and two grandsons.

More than 100 people participated in a day of caring at West Valley Central School, last week, completing several outdoor projects.

Richard and Mary Snethen of Springville will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on June 25.

Debbie King did not seek re-election to the Springville-Griffith Institute School Board and officially retired, during the last school board meeting.

A boy was born to:
Rachel and Craig Reese, at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, May 21.

A girl was born to:
Jessica Thurber and Grant Newman, at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, June 9, Kali Marie Newman.
