FIFTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 16, 1962

Last Wednesday, Aug. 8, 419 youngsters from the town of Concord, village of Springville and West Valley boarded seven buses and journeyed to Crystal Beach for the annual fun day, under the sponsorship of Youth, Inc. and Carl Godert, with assistance by the Kiwanis Club of Springville and Dennis Goodemote. There were 89 youngsters from West Valley, guided by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fleckenstein, also with them.

Local firemen are running a benefit softball game for Dick Wells. The game will be played against Lakeview on Sept. 8 at the Concord Community Park.

Henry Davis VanDermeer, seaman recruit, U.S. Navy, graduated from nine weeks of recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Ill. on Aug. 3, while acting as the recruit chief petty officer of his company.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ploetz of Springville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 8.

FORTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 17, 1972

Donald VanDermeer won first prize in a contest for designing the official seal of the village of Springville.

Judge and Mrs. Hollet Warner will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 18.

Josephine Wooldridge and her daughter, Florence Robinson, have returned from Burlington, Wash. after visiting Wooldrige’s sister, Victoria Otis, whom she hadn’t seen in 35 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Doty Sr. of Springville celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Aug. 9.

Lohrey – Grant – at. St. Aloysius Church, Springville, on Aug. 4, Doris Grant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Grant of Montreal, Quebec, Canada married Donald Lohrey, son of George Lohey of Buffalo. The Rev. Noel Schreck performed the ceremony.

Aug. 12, 1962

The Joylan Theater was sold to Kenneth and Anita Killingbeck, announced Marion Burns.

Countryside T.V. has expanded its operations with a new store on Main Street in Springville. Norm Dell, who has been in business since 1962, is having a grand opening of the Springville store this week.

Powell – Hornung – Saturday, July 31, Donna Hornung, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hornung of West Valley, married Keith Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Powell, at the Powell home in Victory, N.Y.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 13, 1992

The boys U-19 Springville team participated in the 1992 National Triple Crown Soccer finals recently in St. Louis. Coached by George Tedesco Jr., the team compiled an 0 – 4 record.

Staff appointments for the upcoming school year was the order of business for the West Valley Central School Board of Education at its regular meeting, with three teaching vacancies’ filled and a vacancy yet to be filled in the bus garage.

A total of 39 educators from Japan caught a glimpse of local American life and the American educational system last week, when they became the house guests of residents of the Springville and West Valley areas.

Kazmieczak – Perrington – On May 9 at St. John’s Church in West Valley, by Father Carl Kuehmeier, Connie Jo Perrington, daughter of Carol Beardsley of West Valley and Joe Perrington of Springville, married George Kazmierczak, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kazmierczak of West Valley.

TEN YEARS AGO
Aug. 8, 2002

Derek Haight, 19, of North Collins found a small alligator in a pond. He caught the alligator with his hands and called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who turned it over to Elise Able of Fox Wood Wildlife Rescue Center in East Concord. It was learned that the alligator could grow to be 19 feet long.

The town of Ashford will use its own personnel to beef up security around West Valley Central School. Town constables will patrol the school on a regular basis for any violators of a 10 p.m. curfew.

Cori Zerfas, an 11th grade student at West Valley Central School, has won the title of Miss Cattaraugus County teenager 2002. She will compete for the title of Miss Teenager of New York in Norwich in August.

Kaillie Enser, daughter of Rick and Lori Enser of West Valley has been selected as a finalist in the Pre-Teen New York Scholarship and Recognition Program to be held Sept. 13 – 15 at the Holiday Inn in Syracuse.

Rose Hamm, a resident of Fiddlers Green Manor in Springville, recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Tim and Melissa (nee Olson) Ulinger of East Otto, at Westfield Memorial Hospital, July 30, Rebecca Lynn.

Tarulli – Feldman – On April 20, at St. John the Baptist Church in West Valley, the Rev. Thomas McCarthy performed the ceremony for the wedding of Laurel Elaine Feldman, daughter of Lawrence and Susan Feldman of West Valley, and Francesco Paolo Tarulli, son of Pasquale and Rose Tarulli of Edmonton, Alberta.
