New tennis and pickleball courts open in Colden, work on disc golf course continues

COLDEN – Residents going to Kummer Town Park in Colden looking to enjoy the outdoors will see a variety of new and improved amenities for people to use. Work on the tennis and new pickleball courts was recently completed, while work continues on the new disc golf course coming to the town park.

Players use the new pickleball courts at Kummer Town Park in Colden.

The existing courts at Kummer Town Park were resealed to repair cracks and damage and repainted, with two pickleball courts replacing one of the tennis courts. With these renovations, people can enjoy one tennis court, two pickleball courts and a basketball court.

After previously acquiring land adjacent to the current town park, the town recently approved to move forward with a new disc golf course within the park. Colden Supervisor James DePasquale said nine baskets for the disc golf course have been installed, with tee pads to be put in later this summer. DePasquale said the town is looking to open the first nine holes later this summer, with the remaining nine holes opening next year.

Along with the work on the courts and disc golf course, trails are also planned within the woods at Kummer Town Park. Plans for benches along the trails are also planned thanks to an Eagle Scout project from Josh Sullivan. With the town currently updating its comprehensive plan, DePasquale said many residents have asked for more recreational activities and the town is excited to be able to offer more opportunities to those looking for things to do in Colden.

“We have such a great park, but a lot of people weren’t using it and we just felt that it was important to promote more outdoor recreation,” DePasquale said. “We are trying to add in the most popular sports that we see to offer it to the residents.”

DePasquale also reminded people of the summer concert series that continues on Wednesdays from 6:30-9 p.m. at the town gazebo, located next to the Colden Town Hall at 8812 State Road. A special concert will also be on Sept. 11 at Kummer Town Park from 6-9 p.m. with music from NY Rockin Rodeo and a memorial to 9/11 by the Colden Fire Company and other fire companies. Remaining Wednesday concerts include Aug. 10 with Barking Spiders, Aug. 24 with IOT and Sept. 7 with South City.

With a need for volunteers, DePasquale also urged residents to look into joining the Colden Fire Company. Those interested in joining the Colden Fire Company can stop by the fire hall on Monday nights at 7 p.m. or contact Jim Walter at 716-462-3945.
