Wrestling Senior Night honors Nick Brown

In addition to honoring Springville’s wrestling seniors, 2022 graduate and wrestling assistant coach Nick Brown was also honored by Springville varsity head coach Mark Vogel.

Nick Brown is honored by Coach Vogel at Springville’s last home wrestling match last week.

“Assistant Coach Nick Brown has represented the purple and gold proudly and honorably during a distinguished wrestling career, and we have been fortunate to have him join the program as a coach,” Vogel said.

“Wrestling is the most physically and mentally demanding of sports, and Nick has been the epitome of hard work and dedication. The team is fortunate to have him pass on his skills and wisdom to our next generations of wrestlers.”

“Nick capped off a great career with a senior year postseason run that ended with a second-place finish in New York State, the highest place finish in school history. It is important to acknowledge and recognize our student-athletes for their achievements and work. Nick is currently finishing up a program through BOCES that will see him earn his bachelor’s degree at the end of the year.”

At the 2022 NYSPHAA Wrestling Championships, Brown first faced 10th seed Anthony Pipia from Section XI (Port Jefferson High School). Pipia took a commanding 5-0 lead until Brown tied the match in the final seconds of the first period. Brown collected a pair of reversal points in the second period for his first lead at 7-5. In the third period, Brown scored another reversal and was awarded a point when his opponent was flagged for locking hands for a 10-5 final.

Nick Brown looks to get the upper hand in his title bout against undefeated Carter Baer.

In his quarterfinal match with second-seed Emmett Wood from Section IV (Tioga High School), Brown trailed by five after the first period, nine after the second period, and as much as 11 until a reversal got him on the board at 11-2 before earning a fall.

In the semifinal match against third-seed Brady Buttice of Section IV (Bainbridge-Guilford High School), Brown fell behind after his opponent scored two with a takedown early. After that, Brown rose to the challenge and finished with a pin after 1:25 of the first period that gave him the single season Griffin pin record with 26.

The only opponent Brown couldn’t get by was three-time state champion and undefeated top-seed Carter Baer of Section X (Gouverneur High School). Baer was so dominant that he was awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament.

Brown’s 2021-22 senior season ended with a 9-1 postseason record that included a Class B championship, Section VI D-II championship and NYSPHSAA second-place finish as a seven seed.
